SUSTAINABILITY

As a gardener, designer and landscaper [& mum] I am conscientious of how important it is for all of us to live as sustainably as possible. Reducing our impact on local [and global] environments is at the heart of our future... our children's futures... and is something I am constantly striving to do at home, in the garden and in all my garden design and landscaping projects.

I garden using organic methods, encourage wildlife and natural predators to keep control of pests, enhance the soil with natural manures or home compost, and will only plant specimens that are hardy and appropriate to place. In my designs and landscaping my approach is mindful of existing materials, re-incorporating where possible and looking to local sources for reclaimed and natural products. Some projects I work on are progressive maintenance and development projects, allowing me to really get a feel for the space, the local environment and how best to adapt and change the garden. This may include creating mini orchards, productive gardens, meadow areas or a wildlife pond.

Being sustainable works on so many levels; from where we buy our food or try to grow our own, from the energy we use to recycling, to the way we run our businesses. All are important little steps that will bring us closer to a more sustainable life. Below is a list of inspirational initiatives that have this one theme in common, from big organisations to individuals determined to spread the word. If you know of an initiative that isn't listed, please send me an email and I'll happily add it on!
